| The magician gives for examination a padlock and six keys to a committee of spectators and asks them to try each key in the lock. The committee finds that none of the keys will open the lock. The magician then presents a similar key that does open the lock. This key has a length of ribbon tied to it to distinguish it from the others. They open the padlock themselves and snap it shut through a buttonhole of a spectator's coat. The committee then mixes all of the keys and places them in ordinary envelopes. The magician stands away during all of the proceedings. In fact, he need never touch the lock, keys or envelopes. Yet, while still standing at a distance, he points out the envelope containing the one correct key. The spectators then tear open the envelopes, remove the key and open the lock themselves. Condition very fine. | |
